North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918.
The flag of Yemen was adopted on May the 22nd in 1990, when there was
the unification of the two Yemen. The tricolor is the expression of
the Panarabism and a compromise between the flags of the two
countries.
The national flag of Yemen consists of three equal horizontal bands of
red (top), white, and black; similar to the flag of Syria, which has
two green stars in the white band, and of Iraq, which has an Arabic
inscription centered in the white band; also similar to
