Background:
Resistance by native Caribs prevented colonization on St. Vincent
until 1719. Disputed between France and the United Kingdom for most of
the 18th century, the island was ceded to the latter in 1783.
The flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines consists of three
vertical stripes - the left stripe is blue and the right one is an
equal sized green one. The middle stripe is yellow and is twice the
size of the other stripes.
The flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was adopted on October
21, 1985 after gaining independence from Britain in 1979. The diamonds
replaced the flags original emblem when it was adopted.
